For centuries, Christian preachers were asked to focus on the “Four Last Things” – death, judgment, heaven and hell – during the four Sundays of Advent. To modern ears, these themes might sound harsh and off-putting; not what we expect when preparing to celebrate Christmas. But Advent is also about preparing for the second coming of Christ, and these themes were meant to get the faithful focused on the account we must all one day render.
